What is aromatherapy and how can it be of benefit to almost anyone and everyone in this stressful world we live in?  In short, aromatherapy is a very ancient form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mind, body and spirit. I am not talking about anything illegal such a 'drug' use which can also alter a persons mind, body and spirit… and not in a good way.  I have yet to develop a case of the munchies from the use of essential oils.

Essential oils are found naturally in plants, trees, fruits, and vegetables and their components help protect the plants they are from disease and insects. These ATW essential oils also help plants grow throughout their lifetimes. The essential oils are extracted from the plants by steam distillation, which makes them very concentrated and useful for massage when combined with a base or carrier oil and aromatherapy.

There are many benefits in using essential oils in aromatherapy as an alternative form of medication:  Aromatherapy can boost your immune, respiratory, and circulatory systems.  It can relieve minor discomforts, reprieve stress, enhance your mood, and balance your well being. Aromatherapy can't cure or heal major illnesses, but it is effective in many of the discomforts we suffer as a result of those illnesses.

Essential oils are used primarily in two ways.  Topical application and various forms of diffusion.  Diffusion is the process of dispersing essential oils so that their aroma fills a room or an area with the natural fragrance. From the simple to the elaborate, many different methods exist for diffusing essential oils into a room.

Aromatherapy is also 'green' using all natural oils that are distilled from parts of plants, fruits, vegetables, seeds, and trees.  I have found many uses for the essential oils used in aromatherapy by using them to make natural household cleaners, air fresheners, dish and laundry soaps, lip balm, perfume, and even deodorant.  Aromatherapy is easy, safe and effective for almost everyone.  Allergic reactions to essential oils are extremely rare and there popularity is growing year after year as people look for a safe and natural way to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Aromatherapy is not just passing fad.  It has been practiced in one form or another for over 6000 years.  Today, aromatherapy is considered one of the most popular forms of alternative therapies. The last two decades have seen a surging interest in and practice of natural healing methods through aromatherapy oils. Plant medicines were seen as somewhat outdated, but there has been renewed interest of late. Alternative therapies in general are increasing in popularity as people are realizing that western medicine does not have all the answers and often treat the symptoms only.

As aromatherapy has become more and more popular, the prices of essential oils continue to become more and more affordable.  At one time it was considered something only accessable for the rich and priviledged. Today essential oils are widely available and inexpensive for almost anyone.
